Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large group of viruses that create illness ranging from the normal cold to more severe disorders such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a new strain that was discovered in 2019 and has not been earlier identified in humans.
Coronaviruses are zoonotic, this simply means they are transmitted between animals and humans. Thorough investigations have proven beyond all doubts that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-CoV from Arabian camels (dromedary camels) to humans. Many coronaviruses are circulating in animals that have not yet infected humans.

Well-known manifestations of the virus include:

  1. Respiratory signs
  2. Severe fever
  3. Severe cough (Dry Cough)
  4. Difficulty in breathing
  5. Pneumonia in severe cases
  6. Acute respiratory syndrome
  7. Kidney failure

The standard way to prevent the outbreak of the disease include:

1. Washing of hands under running water
2. Covering mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
3. Thoroughly cooking meat and eggs
4. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing
